Introduction: Trust Has Not Disappeared — It Has Been Compressed

In the age of large-scale algorithmic evaluation and generative AI, professional trust has not vanished.
What has disappeared is the capacity of existing systems to preserve context, depth, and long-term credibility.

What was once accumulated through years of experience, institutional affiliation, and professional accountability is increasingly flattened into instantly calculable signals — rankings, keywords, visibility metrics, and engagement scores.

From Trust Evaluation to Trust Compression

Traditional trust mechanisms were designed for human-mediated judgment.
They assumed time, interpretation, and contextual understanding.

Algorithmic systems operate differently.
They prioritize speed, comparability, and statistical efficiency, inevitably compressing complex professional signals into simplified representations.

This structural transformation produces what this paper defines as:

AI-Induced Trust Compression
The systemic reduction of high-context professional trust into low-context, machine-interpretable signals under algorithmic evaluation.

Why This Is a Structural Problem — Not a Moral One

AI-Induced Trust Compression is not caused by bad actors, misinformation, or unethical professionals.

It is the natural outcome of optimization-driven systems that were never designed to preserve institutional memory, experiential depth, or longitudinal accountability.

As a result:

  • Expertise becomes indistinguishable from exposure
  • Credibility collapses into visibility
  • Long-term responsibility loses weight against short-term performance signals

International Governance Context

Similar concerns have already been identified at the international policy level.

The OECD AI Principles explicitly emphasize human-centred and trustworthy AI, warning that automated decision-making systems lacking transparency and explainability risk undermining trust in professional and institutional structures.

The Missing Concept in Existing Frameworks

While global governance frameworks acknowledge the risk, they stop short of naming the mechanism.

What has remained conceptually undefined is the compression process itself —
how algorithmic evaluation structurally degrades trust without malicious intent.

AI-Induced Trust Compression fills this gap by providing:

  • A precise name for the phenomenon
  • A structural diagnosis rather than a moral judgment
  • A bridge between AI governance and professional trust theory

From Compression to Governance

Identifying AI-Induced Trust Compression is not an end in itself.

It serves as the diagnostic foundation for a broader governance response:
the reconstruction of professional trust as a verifiable, traceable, and accumulative asset in digital environments.

This response is articulated through the framework of Digital Trust Capital (DTC).

Why Trust Must Be Rebuilt as Capital

In compressed environments, trust must acquire properties that algorithms can recognize without destroying meaning.

Digital Trust Capital reframes trust as:

  • Observable rather than performative
  • Accumulative rather than episodic
  • Governed rather than self-declared

Without such a framework, professional credibility will continue to erode under algorithmic pressure.

Conclusion: Naming the Compression Is the First Act of Governance

AI-Induced Trust Compression is not a flaw to be fixed through better content or louder signals.

It is a structural condition of algorithmic environments.

By naming it, defining it, and positioning it within a governance framework, we move from passive adaptation to active reconstruction.

Trust does not disappear in the age of AI.
It is either compressed — or governed.
